Magnesium Supplements Boost Brainpower
A recent study from China has found that an increase in brain magnesium improves learning and memory in young and old rats.
The same findings may hold true for humans, with the ability to slow the deterioration of memory in aging people.
It has been long known that diet can have a significant impact on the mind. This particular study looks at whether increased levels of the dietary supplement magnesium enhances brain power.
After boosting levels of magnesium in rats of all different ages, researchers discovered an increased number of functional synapses.
A synapse is a tiny gap between the ends of nerve fibres across which nerve impulses pass from one neuron to another.
At the synapse, an impulse causes the release of a neurotransmitter, which diffuses across the gap and triggers an electrical impulse in the next neuron. Additionally, both short and long-term synaptic processes were enhanced.
Professor Guosong Liu, director of the Centre for Learning and Memory at Tsinghua University in Beijing, said “We found that increased brain magnesium enhanced many different forms of learning and memory in both young and aged rats,”
Researchers said the beneficial observed effects were due to the elevation of magnesium to levels higher than provided by a normal diet.
Dr. Liu pointed out that half the population of industrialized countries has a magnesium deficit, a problem that increases with age. His study also supports the scientific speculation that inadequate levels of magnesium decrease brain function as we age. Increasing magnesium may bring much-needed relief to aging adults who suffer from memory loss.
The benefits of magnesium supplementation have been known for quite some time now. Not only is it beneficial for memory, cognitive skills, muscle, nerve and bone health and even heart health; it is involved in over 300 other bodily processes.
Without it, we can become sick and experience a range of serious illnesses and disease.
Magnesium deficiency affects all body tissues. Symptoms of severe deficiency include irritability, weakness, tiredness, vertigo, nervousness, muscle cramps and tremors, irregular heartbeat, palpitations, low blood sugar and sustained muscle contraction.
Magnesium deficiency can also lead to low blood calcium levels as it is crucial for the absorption of calcium into bones. There have been several great studies showing how magnesium deficiency can lead to osteoporosis, like the one found here.
