Riboflavin Deficiency
Riboflavin is an essential vitamin and is easily destroyed by light. Oral contraceptives may cause a riboflavin deficiency as well. Any excess is excreted in the urine, frequently imparting a bright yellow color. Symptoms of Deficiency
A shortage of this vitamin may manifest itself as cracks and sores at the corners of the mouth,
- eye disorders
- inflammation of the mouth and tongue, and
- skin lesions
- cracks at corners of the mouth
- dermatitis
- dizziness
- hair loss
- insomnia
- light sensitivity
- poor digestion
- retarded growth
- hormonal disorders
Oral contraceptives may cause a riboflavin deficiency so supplementation is advised at this time.
Slow mental responses have also been shown to respond to supplementation of riboflavin.. Burning feet can also be indicative of a shortage. Riboflavin supplements are provided during treatment of neonatal jaundice with phototherapy.
