Riboflavin Deficiency

Riboflavin is an essential vitamin and is easily destroyed by light. Oral contraceptives may cause a riboflavin deficiency as well. Any excess is excreted in the urine, frequently imparting a bright yellow color. As the human body does not store riboflavin it is thought deficiency is common.Riboflavin is an essential vitamin and is easily destroyed by light.

Symptoms of Deficiency

A shortage of this vitamin may manifest itself as cracks and sores at the corners of the mouth,

  • eye disorders
  • inflammation of the mouth and tongue, and
  • skin lesions
  • cracks at corners of the mouth
  • dermatitis
  • dizziness
  • hair loss
  • insomnia
  • light sensitivity
  • poor digestion
  • retarded growth
  • hormonal disorders

Oral contraceptives may cause a riboflavin deficiency so supplementation is advised at this time.

Slow mental responses have also been shown to respond to supplementation of riboflavin.. Burning feet can also be indicative of a shortage. Riboflavin supplements are provided during treatment of neonatal jaundice with phototherapy.
