An increasing amount of evidence indicates that Essential Fatty Acids can prevent a wide range of medical problems, including cardiovascular disease, asthma, arthritis, inflammation and even depression.

With all the attention being on a ¶?low-fat’ diet, some may wonder why ingesting plenty of ¶?fatty acids’ can be a good thing.

So are you getting enough of these beneficial fats? Or are you at risk of developing serious deficiency symptoms?

Essential Fatty Acids (EFA’s belong to two main families known as omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids. (EFA’s) are tagged ‘essential’ because our body cannot produce nor survive without them and they must be consumed from our diet.

Omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids have multiple roles in the body, one of the most important being a structural role in our cell membranes. Every cell in the body is enclosed by a thin lipid membrane which keeps the contents safe and contained. This membrane’s components include essential fatty acids.

Omega-3 fatty acids play a key role in a range of vital body processes, from regulating blood pressure and blood clotting to reducing inflammation and boosting the immune system.

The two most potent forms of omega-3’s, eicosapentanoic acid (EPA) and docosahexanoic acid (DHA) are found in abundance in cold-water fish. The sources of a third type of omega-3, alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), are certain vegetable oils and green leafy vegetables.

However ALA does not affect the body in the same way as EPA and DHA do.

Omega-3 fatty acids play a key role in a range of vital body processes, from regulating blood pressure and blood clotting to reducing inflammation and boosting the immune system.

Omega-3’s may also be useful for preventing or treating many conditions. Essential fats play an important role in regulating inflammation, forming cell membranes, and in the optimal function of the brain, nerves, eyes, skin, connective tissue, blood vessels, and every cell in the body.

The DHA component of Omega-3’s are especially effective for brain development, cognitive skills and concentration, especially in babies and children.

Supplementation with top-quality fish oil has shown to dramatically improve symptoms of ADD and ADHD; more so than some specialist drugs. Omega-3’s are a safe and effective treatment for children of all ages, without any negative side effects or dangers.

Fish oils have appeared to reduce the risk of heart disease in several ways. The presence of omega-3’s makes platelets in the blood less likely to clump together and form the clots that lead to heart attacks. Omega-3’s also have the ability to reduce cholesterol and lower blood pressure.

The EPA component of omega-3’s are also effective general anti-inflammatories, useful for joint problems, lupus and psoriasis. Studies have shown that supplementation with EPA and DHA can reduce joint inflammation, ease inflammatory conditions like Crohn’s and IBS, reduce arthritis pain and alleviate symptoms of asthma and eczema.

Deficiency symptoms can include:

  • Eczema like skin eruptions
  • Loss of hair
  • Behavioural disturbances and learning problems
  • Susceptibility to infections
  • Poor wound healing
  • Arthritis like conditions
  • Low metabolic rate
  • Heart and circulatory problems

This test is especially important for anyone who doesn’t regularly consume fish, has an inadequate diet or who suffers from joint, muscle, tissue or skeletal pain. This test allows us to uncover the imbalances associated with heart disease, high blood pressure, insulin resistance, diabetes, asthma, depression, ADHD and inflammatory disorders, which can all be related to inadequate EFA ingestion.

This test could potentially give you the power to take control of your health, and life, and prevent disease and illness before they occur.
