Minerals Tested (all red blood cell values)

Magnesium – Magnesium is involved in over 300 enzymatic reactions in the body, playing a role in energy production, nerve function, muscle relaxation, and bone and tooth formation. In conjunction with calcium and potassium, magnesium regulates heart rhythm; it also plays a role in the production and use of insulin to help regulate blood sugar levels.

Magnesium is easily depleted as it is a water soluble mineral so deficiency is common and can contribute to muscle cramping, premenstrual symptoms, insomnia, fatigue, hypertension and a range of other conditions.

Manganese – manganese is an essential trace element required in the body to activate certain enzymes. It is also forms parts of a specific enzyme group known as metalloenzymes, which play a role in antioxidant systems, carbohydrate and lipid metabolism, bone blood clot and protein formation. In addition, manganese is essential for healthy brain function.

Deficiency of manganese may be associated with impaired fertility, growth retardation, birth defects, bone malformations, seizures, diabetes and general weakness.

Copper – Copper is another trace mineral essential to human health. It is involved in antioxidant systems and the formation of collagen, a fundamental protein in bones, skin and connective tissue. Copper is also used by the body for red blood cell formation and utilisation of stored iron, and may play a role in maintaining cardiovascular health, immunity and fertility.

Copper deficiency is most common in individuals with compromised nutrient absorption, however it can also be caused by long term zinc supplementation or zinc excess. Copper toxicity can also cause zinc deficiency, and an imbalance in zinc:copper levels has been found to play a role in many mental health conditions.

Zinc – Zinc is involved in many biochemical reactions including the building of all new tissues, normal immune responses, nerve function and reproduction. Zinc also forms part of the army of protective antioxidants produced within the body.

Zinc deficiency is associated with a number of mood and developmental disorders, compromised immune function, hormonal imbalance and infertility, reduced sense of taste and smell, hair loss and alopecia, and poor growth and development in children.

Selenium – Selenium is a trace mineral that forms an important part of the antioxidant enzyme, glutathione peroxidase. Selenium thereby helps to protect DNA and cells from rogue molecules known as free radicals that are generated from environmental and dietary toxins.

Selenium also plays a protective role in the cardiovascular system, boost immune function, may improve prostate health and helps to slow ageing processes.

Selenium is particularly effective when combined with other antioxidant nutrients such as Vitamin E and C.

Deficiency of selenium and many trace minerals is common as the soil used in conventional farming in Australia (and worldwide) is mineral deplete, therefore reducing dietary supply of minerals.

Once you have purchased your test, an Emed Integrative Medicine Practitioner will contact you with details of your nearest Healthscope collection centre for you to have your blood sample taken.

Once your results have been processed, your Emed Practitioner will analyse the test results for you and provide an easy-to-understand but comprehensive manual and report.
